This Year, Malta is celebrating 100 years of film. For many decades, the film industry in Malta was a seasonal one, working only for a short period of time.
But, in the last 8 years, the film industry has undergone a quiet but quick revolution. It has now become an industry, working all year round, creating careers in film, attracting more global investment and expanding the skills of thousands of Maltese and Gozitan workers.
In 2024 alone, over 3,000 job opportunities in film were created for locals. Today, 8 out of 10 working in films are Maltese. In just five years, over 15,000 jobs have been sustained by the film industry.
Since 2018, Malta has hosted 169 film productions with total budgets of over €635 million. These productions helped bring around €1 billion into the Maltese economy. When film crews spend money in Malta, on things like restaurants, taxis, shopping, and entertainment, it doesn’t just help hotels and shops. It also supports many other areas of the economy.
In the last 5 years, the film industry generated over a billion euro in Malta’s economy. Foreign film crews spending millions into our economy.
Film incentives offered by the Maltese government are working. They bring value and help the local economy grow.
Today, the Maltese film industry is no longer seasonal. It’s a strong, growing industry. With good planning, local talent, and infrastructure investment, Malta is now building a world-class film industry.
